What is RTR(A)?

RTR (A) stands for Radio Telephony Restricted to Aero-mobile; used by pilots and aeronautical engineers to use the wireless telecommunication with ATC or ground station.

Why RTR (A) licence is required for Pilots?

In aviation sector almost each and every work depends on radio communication and is the important pillar for the safe and smooth operation in Aviation Industry. As a pilot we have to communicate with different authorities like ATC, ground, approach and other department on continuous basis and throughout we need to use standard RT phraseology without any mistake. A specific aviation terminology is used to form the sentence in short time because of limited time.

This proficiency is checked in RTR exam about the knowledge of RT procedure and rules and regulation which is conducted by Wireless planning and coordination (WPC) wing. This is the radio regulatory authority which comes under Ministry of Communication. Once you clear the exam, RTR licence will be issued as “Certificate of Proficiency”.  That gives the privilege to pilot to operate the radio equipment. It is mandatory for every pilot.

Eligibility criteria for RTR (A)?

Educational qualification:            10+2 or equivalent

Minimum age:                                 18 years on the date of exam.

What is RTR (A) exam pattern?

The examination will consist of the following two parts:-

Part-I – Practical test in Regulations and Procedure – 100 Marks

A practical test will be conducted over a synthetic R/T circuit.  Candidates will be required to use phonetic alphabets and general procedure for radio telephone working.  Candidates will be required to carry out communications associated with mobile and/or base stations.  Typical examples of what the candidates are expected to carry out are: Preparation of messages for transmission, exchange of traffic, use of priorities requesting D/F assistance, obtaining meteorological information, position reports, distress urgency, safety and D/F procedure.

Part-II – Oral examination in —- 100 marks
